how tire size math works
a metric tire size reads width / aspect / rim: 245/40r18 is 245 mm wide with a sidewall 40% of that width, on an 18 inch rim. overall diameter is the rim plus two sidewalls.
sidewall (in) = width (mm) × aspect% / 100 / 25.4
diameter (in) = rim + 2 × sidewall
keep replacement diameters within about 3% of stock and the speedometer, abs, and gearing all stay honest. bigger jumps are a gearing change, which is what the gear ratio tool is for.
