Backspacing = (rim width + 1") / 2 + offset. A spacer pushes the wheel outboard, lowering effective offset and poking it out by the spacer thickness per side. Confirm hub, stud length, and fender clearance before fitting spacers.

offset and backspacing, translated

offset is where the wheel's mounting face sits relative to its centerline, in millimeters. positive offset tucks the wheel inboard; negative pushes it out. backspacing measures the same thing from the wheel's back lip, in inches, which is why the two camps talk past each other.

backspacing (in) = (width + 1) / 2 + offset (mm) / 25.4

frontspacing (in) = overall width − backspacing

the +1 accounts for the wheel's flanges: a 9 inch wheel is about 10 inches lip to lip. lower offset or wider wheel means more poke toward the fender; higher offset means less strut clearance inboard.

what a spacer really does

a spacer moves the mounting face outboard, which is exactly a drop in effective offset. the wheel itself doesn't change; its position does.

effective offset = offset − spacer thickness (mm)

a 15 mm spacer on an et45 wheel gives you an effective et30: 15 mm more poke, 15 mm more inner clearance. clearance you gain inboard is fender gap you spend outboard.
